Gulfton was Counted!
Our team of volunteers and staff worked diligently to ensure all residents of the Gulfton community were counted this past Census 2020. Despite the obstacles created by the global COVID-19 pandemic, we were able to connect with individuals and families through phone calls and text messages. We also safely canvassed the area to encourage and help Gulfton residents complete their census forms.
The 2020 Census project was a great outreach experience for our organization. The Fall 2020 stretch of the project was composed of 8 volunteers who together successfully made 5758 calls. This would not have been possible without our dedicated volunteers such as Tayma Machkas who described her experience:
“I’ve always thought that filling out the census was incredibly important. The census benefits communities when it comes to future policy, and public health needs. Census phone banking with Houston in Action allowed me to more actively spread the importance of the census within our community. With that being said, I was really grateful for this opportunity, and had a great experience overall!”
