Girls’ Club for Success is a group-format multi-session structured psychosocial program that is based on principles of Social-Emotional Learning and follows a recognized SEL curriculum workbook. It is intended for female youth who may have difficulty with social and educational demands and are at risk for negative outcomes such as behavioral health problems, family conflict, or dropping out of school.
Girls’ Club for Success was created to engage and empower immigrant and refugee girls through social and emotional learning workshops. The workshop topics offered included storytelling, self-image, culture, community engagement, mindfulness, resilience, nutrition, wellness, and goal-making.
The program has seen many successes since it began. Participants have been enthusiastic about each workshop and show interest in the topics presented. Many students faced language barriers and were not able to fully express themselves through writing.
The best results for our students came from approaching each topic through discussion, visual and performing arts, and physical activity. Because Girls’ Club participants spend most of their time in school completing assignments, CHAT worked to ensure Girls’ Club was as engaging as possible.
In the past we have held this program at Sharpstown High School, Las Americas Newcomer School, and Sutton Elementary. This year we are collaborating with Westbury High School to offer the program in person, following CDC guidelines.
