No Child Left Behind in Gulfton
How do you go back to school virtually when you don’t have access to a computer or a laptop?
How do you keep up with your classmates and not fall behind when the only internet connection you have access to is not reliable?
How do you complete entire assignments using only a mobile phone?
It may seem unrealistic to expect anyone to succeed under these circumstances, but for hundreds of families in the Gulfton area of Houston this has been their reality since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic last school year. Children from elementary to high school are struggling. If they are lucky enough to have a computer, they are all taking turns using it to complete classwork and homework assignments. The majority of students in the Gulfton area – one of the most severely impacted by COVID-19 in the Houston region – only have a mobile phone to be able to connect with teachers and their school.
Over the summer our volunteers were able to work one-on-one with each of our families to be able to troubleshoot their connectivity issues, many times resorting to completing CHAT Academy tutoring sessions via WhatsApp or FaceTime.
Now that volunteers are also returning to their full schedules, they will not be able to spend as much time working with each individual family. For that reason, CHAT Is asking for your support to be able to purchase and provide individual laptops for each of the students served by its CHAT Academy program.
Our goal is to make sure that no child in Gulfton is left behind!
Why give to CHAT?
We have been working with this community from the beginning. After the coronavirus pandemic made it necessary to close our physical location temporarily, we transitioned quickly to virtual CHAT Academy tutoring services. We moved quickly to help our students finish their school years successfully in their new distance education settings.
We worked with students to make the little technology they have access to work in completing their school assignments.
We helped them in the subject matters they needed help within their language of choice.
We continue to inform and encourage families to practice safe social distancing measures, even while many have been directly impacted by COVID-19.
We know what assistance each family needs and we are working to make sure all our CHAT Academy students have the technology they need to be successful in the 2020-2021 school year. Please consider making a contribution to this effort today.
