CHAT (Culture of Health – Advancing Together) works to empower immigrant and refugee families through education and social services. CHAT volunteers help them assimilate in the American society. Beyond that, they learn about healthy living, and how to get more connected and involved within their new home. Connection to the volunteer teachers serves as a cultural exchange and relieves the isolation of living in a country with very different native traditions. Interacting with people of other cultures builds their self-confidence and enables them to live a healthy life with minimal stress. Ultimately, this also helps reduce the burden of stress related to chronic diseases.
