Culture of Health-Advancing Together (CHAT) was founded in 2015 with a desire to foster health and well-being of the immigrant and refugee community in Houston through education and advocacy. CHAT believes in taking a comprehensive approach to health and uses the Robert Woods Johnson definition of a culture of health as one in which good health and well-being flourish across geographic, demographic and social sectors. CHAT’s comprehensive approach creates programs that specifically target the Social Determinants of Health: Education, Economic Stability, Community, Healthcare, and Environment. Through community health needs assessments and engagement, CHAT will work to understand the specific needs of the population and create programs tailored to address those needs. Along with creating new programs, CHAT will leverage partnerships and connect the community to appropriate resources. The aim is to build an environment, or a culture of health, where everyone works together to foster healthy communities and make it part of being American.
